Aston Martin Confirms Former AMG Chief Moers as New CEO

17 June 2020

Aston Martin has just confirmed a weekend report from the Financial Times, announcing that Andy Palmer is stepping down as President and Group Chief Executive of the company.

At the same time, it was revealed that former Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers will take over Palmer’s role as CEO of Aston Martin. The 54-year-old Moers will be based at Aston’s headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, and will begin his new role on August 1 of this year.

“I’m genuinely thrilled to be joining Aston Martin Lagonda at this stage of its development,” Moers commented. “I’ve always had a passion for performance cars, and I’m excited by the opportunity to work for this iconic brand, one I was closely connected to on the technical side back when the partnership between the two companies (Aston Martin and AMG, editor’s note) first began.”

“Following the arrival of Lawrence Stroll as Chairman, the significant investment from his Yew Tree consortium, the completed capital increase and the company’s relaunch, I believe there’s a real opportunity to build on the company’s strengths to successfully drive forward the planned product expansion and the brand’s positive momentum.”

Meanwhile, Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that Moers will be replaced as CEO of the Affalterbach-based performance brand by Philipp Schiemer. Schiemer has been with the company since 1987 and currently serves as head of Mercedes-Benz Brazil.

He will be joined by Jochen Hermann as Chief Technical Officer and member of the management board. Hermann currently heads eDrive development at Daimler AG and will be returning to AMG.

“With Philipp Schiemer and Jochen Hermann, we’re bringing two highly experienced Daimler executives to AMG. They will help drive the company forward and take it to a new level. Electric mobility will also play a major role for AMG going forward,” said Daimler CEO Ola Källenius.

Mercedes-AMG GmbH posted its highest-ever sales in the 2019 fiscal year, with more than 132,000 vehicles sold, up from around 70,000 vehicles annually back in 2015.

“Tobias Moers has led the AMG brand to major success. We thank him sincerely for that, and we see his departure with mixed feelings. We’re losing a top executive, but at the same time gaining an excellent new CEO at our partners Aston Martin, with whom we’ve enjoyed a long and successful collaboration,” Källenius added.
