AUSMAH Announces Mandatory Winter Tires for Trucks in Austria

Starting in early November, Austria’s rules requiring winter tires for trucks, regardless of weather conditions, will come into effect.
The announcement was made by the press service of Austria’s Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK).
From November 1 through April 15, winter tires will be mandatory for heavy trucks across Austria. The rule applies to all trucks with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 tons, regardless of weather or road conditions at any given time.
According to the announcement, a tire only qualifies as a winter tire if it carries the M+S, MS, M&S or M/S marking, an abbreviation for “mud and snow.” Tread depth must be at least four millimeters, or five millimeters for diagonal-ply tires. The same requirements apply to all-season and studded tires as well.
