African Scientists Claim Bananas Are the Ideal Material for Automotive Manufacturing

01 October 2020

At least some varieties of bananas can be used to produce strong, rust-free components with excellent noise-dampening properties, all at a remarkably low cost.

According to experts at the University of Johannesburg, one particular banana variety known as plantain has unique properties. Its fibers are notably durable, making the plant a viable material for producing automotive parts.

Components made this way would be completely rust-proof while also offering lightweight construction, strong durability and excellent noise reduction.

This makes banana fiber suitable for producing items such as door panels and engine interior covers. The material also works well for interior noise insulation. Its biggest advantage is its low cost.
