UAW Launches First-Ever Simultaneous Strike Against Ford, GM and Stellantis

16 September 2023

For the first time in its 88-year history, the United Auto Workers union launched a coordinated strike against all three Detroit automakers at once, targeting assembly plants in Michigan, Ohio and Missouri after contract negotiations broke down.

The union, led by President Shawn Fain, sought a 36% wage increase over four years along with improved benefits and job security. The strike gradually expanded to dozens of additional plants before Ford, Stellantis and General Motors each reached tentative agreements with the union by late October.

AUSMAH sees the strike as a reflection of broader tensions across the industry as automakers balance record profits, rising labor costs and the ongoing shift toward electric vehicle production.
